TITLE: School Counseling Assistant - (Grant Funded Position)

LOCATION: Jefferson-Lewis BOCES with shared assignments between  LaFargeville & Copenhagen

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: $30,000-$35,000 Commensurate with certification/experience and in keeping with the negotiated agreement. RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: School Counseling Assistants hired by the JLHHO BOCES, on behalf of the targeted schools will:

  • Serve to support each district in providing instruction and implementation of the social emotional learning curriculum, Positive Action, with students in grades 6-12.
  • Assist district faculty and staff in supporting students and their families to resolve attendance, learning, behavioral, or other educational barriers.
  • Act as a member of relevant district committees possibly including, but not limited to, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Team, Child Study Team, Safety Committee, Health and Wellness, SEL Teams.
  • Support grant initiatives such as development of MTSS framework, reducing Chronic Absenteeism, improving Family Engagement, increasing Graduation Rates, and incorporating Social/Emotional Learning.
  • Act on grant’s intent to reengage disconnected students lost during the pandemic by bringing them back to an educational program in the local school, at BOCES, or to workforce development or other training with the range of grant partners.
  • Focus efforts on the secondary population of students identified as most in need in terms of an MTSS framework.
  • Engage in data-based decision-making with district staff to identify student supports.
  • Assist Career and Technical Education students with finding internships or career-relevant volunteer experiences (liaising with the BOCES leaders for this), identifying barriers to such experiences (e.g., transportation) and working with district and other leaders to address these barriers, establishing pre-internship type experiences for youth including community service and volunteering.
  • Work with the School Counselors and the Community School Coordinators to fill gaps in outreach to families and students.
  • Team with district staff to make home visits to students and their families to establish rapport, obtain and relay information on students’ standing, and make referrals to community services agencies.
  • Work with the School Counselor to identify students at risk of not passing the Accuplacer in Mathematics and likely to attend community college, where it will be given as a prerequisite for credit-bearing coursework. Establish a review program, working with families and students to support buy-in and administer the assessment prior to the student enrolling.

DUTIES: This is routine and repetitive physical work involving the efficient and economical performance of building cleaning and related tasks.  Cleaning tasks are performed according to a well-established procedure.  The work is performed under the supervision of an immediate supervisor.  The incumbent does related work as required.    

$15.56 per hour
